Hello
I bought and imported a Chihuahua male puppy from a very famous and important spanish breeder.
Now its almost 8 months old,I was thinking that like he has FCI stamboom,is healthy, applehead, perfect body, and can give blue-tan or choco-tan puppies it can be good he have a nest.
My question is,in my country the dekreu have the right to select a puppy and get it for free (its also in the FCI international reglement)Is it so in the netherlands too?
I would like in the future, not now, have another Chihuahua of the same breeder, but it was so expensive the buy the pup and the import that I thought it can be better have a nest and then get a pup from him.
I hope I dont get so much hate about posting i nenglish,my dutch is not so good and its an important question so I didnt want to have any mistake.
Hello Kathanya,
If you're going to breed with your dog, make sure you get it tested on all the genetic diseases it could carry with it. Even when a dog has a pedigree, it can still be unhealthy.
Also, i would wait until your dog is a bit older before you breed with him.
If all the tests are done and your dog is indeed healthy and free from genetic diseases, then you can breed with him. It strongly depends on the owner of the female dog if you will get the rights to pick a puppy from the litter. Some will agree to this, some won't, you will have to discuss that with the other owner.
The choice between a pup or getting a fee is usually up to the owner of the stud dog. But there can be different customs for small breeds because of the small litters and high costs (like a cesaerian)
First of all, I don't think your main reason for breeding with your dog should be 'because you can get a puppy for free' of course.
Your dog should really add something to the chihuahua breed, so I would suggest you go to a few dog shows and show your dog to see if your dog looks good according to the chihuahua standards (size, built, etc.). You'll also have to see how the character develops (since he's only 8 months old, it will probably change a bit when he'll get older, becomes an adult) and if that character then also is according to the standards.
If the conclusion after all of this is that your chihuahua really adds something, you could consider breeding with him.
To answer your question, I don't think there are any official rules for these kinds of things, but I do know that some people indeed have 'a puppy of the litter' as their stud fee. I think it's a bit more usual though that the stud fee is the actual (retail) price of one puppy and not an actual puppy, and sometimes even the size of the litter is a decisive factor.
Even the international breeding rules according to the FCI don't state that you'd get a puppy for free; it's something that you, as an owner of the sire/stud, together with the owner of the bitch/dam agree on and write down.
'Apart from the stud fee which was agreed, the owner of the stud dog has no further rights concerning the litter towards the owner of the bitch. Specifically, he has no right to get a puppy from the litter. However, if there is a mutual agreement that the stud fee will be a puppy, it must be made in writing prior to the mating. Thanks for the answers. Its for a future not for now :) I was thinking it like an option to give a little friend to him, since I have a 5 years old greyhound and a yorkie mix 16 years old adopted and due the size of one and the age of other they cant play so much together.
